Welcome To The Linguistics Tutorial

This Linguistics Tutorial is intended to provide a step-by-step overview of what you need to know to understand Linguistics as taught at a basic college level.  The author is by no means an authority on the subject and relies heavily on exercises and materials presented through a wide variety of sources cited herein.  As this is but a sample of a number of great works on the subject, this author strongly recommend further reading on the subject.

My own intention in building this tutorial is to create my own sort of Idiots Guide to Linguistics which, I'm sorry to say, does not exist.  There is, in fact, no easy way around learning the subject; the material is difficult and dry at times.   Because of this, I have attempted to create small, one page blurbs to broaden your understanding along with some exercises to reinforce the practical side of the material presented.

You will find that I will switch back and forth from the first person to highlight my own thoughts, trials and tribulations with Linguistics.  Personally, I took Contemporary Linguistics in the Spring of 2007, dropping the class at the break with a fuzzy understanding of the subject matter while still pulling an A in the class.  In general, I don't like taking a class that I don't understand, and this began a long road to the independent study which resulted in this monstrosity you see before you.

Generally, if you follow the links through page by page, you can cover a large area of the subject without taxing your brain.  The idea is that you should be able to remember small packets of information that teach one skill-set in a simple no-nonsense way.  While this works well early on, it begins to stumble a bit in later lessons as the information becomes more complex.
