Segments are individual speech sounds, and are also known
as phones.
They are defined by the phonetic symbol in broad transcription, yet can
be further defined through the use of diacritics
into narrow transcription. Diacritics
allow for phonetic detail, which you will learn allows for a deeper
understanding of meaning in utterances.
